Couples Intensive Sessions

When your relationship reaches a turning point, waiting a full week between hour-long sessions can feel like watching a small crack widen into a canyon. I understand how frightening that can feel.

That’s why I offer couples intensive sessions here at New Hope Counseling—a different path forward. These are extended, structured counseling appointments I’ve designed to help you and your partner work through urgent or longstanding relationship distress in one focused, concentrated experience.

An intensive is far more than a longer therapy appointment to me. It’s a carefully planned clinical intervention that I build around clear goals, guided practice, well-timed breaks, and a written plan for the days and weeks that follow.

Rather than stretching your progress across months of scattered visits, I gather that work into a dedicated block of time where we can build real momentum together.

Whether your schedule limits your regular access to care, weekly sessions feel too slow for what you’re facing, or you simply want deep, uninterrupted work on communication, trust, intimacy, or a major life transition, I can create the space you need to do meaningful work together.

Key Benefits

I designed couples intensive sessions to offer you a unique opportunity to focus deeply on your relationship in a concentrated period of time. This approach allows for meaningful breakthroughs and lasting growth in the areas that matter most to you and your partner.

Here’s what you can expect from working with me in this focused format:

  • Accelerated Progress on the Issues That Matter Most

By concentrating our therapeutic work into extended sessions, you and your partner can move through repetitive conflict cycles and longstanding hurts more quickly than the traditional weekly rhythm often allows.

Instead of re-entering the same difficult conversation from scratch each week, I’ll help you stay with the process long enough to reach genuine understanding and repair.

  • Practical, Take-Home Skills

I ground my intensives in doing, not just talking. You’ll develop real tools for communication, conflict resolution, emotional repair, and de-escalation—skills you can carry into your kitchen, your car, and every future disagreement.

These are the everyday abilities I want you to have so your relationship stays steady long after our intensive ends.

  • A Flexible Option for Busy or Distant Lives

If you’re a professional juggling a demanding calendar, a parent with little free time, or part of a couple separated by geography, I know fitting weekly appointments into life can feel nearly impossible.

That’s why I condense significant progress into a manageable window, making focused support accessible to you when the usual format simply doesn’t fit.

  • A Clear, Goal-Oriented Approach

I anchor every intensive with concrete, measurable objectives. You’ll know exactly what we’re working toward and how to recognize progress, so the experience feels purposeful and grounded rather than open-ended.

How It Works

Relationships can be complex, but support and guidance can help pave the way to meaningful change. Our Couples Intensive sessions are designed with care, providing structure, clarity, and expert strategies to foster growth and healing.

Below is a step-by-step guide to give you a sense of what to expect during this focused and supportive experience.

  • A Thorough Pre-Intensive Assessment

Before any intensive work begins, we meet with each partner—both individually and together. This time is spent understanding your relationship dynamics, personal and shared goals, and readiness for the intensive.

Additionally, we gently explore mental-health concerns, safety considerations, and whether this approach is suitable for both of you. This step is never rushed, ensuring the process remains ethical, appropriate, and genuinely beneficial.

  • A Thoughtfully Structured Session

The intensive sessions are designed with a balanced rhythm to keep you engaged without feeling overwhelmed. Activities may include brief teaching moments, guided dialogue, emotion-regulation exercises, and periods of quiet reflection.

You’ll explore your unique relationship patterns, practice speaker–listener communication, unearth the emotions and needs beneath conflict, and work through structured repair conversations. These sessions provide a supportive environment for meaningful progress.

  • Evidence-Based Methods You Can Trust

Our approach is grounded in well-researched and widely trusted therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral couple therapy, integrative behavioral couple therapy, and emotionally focused couple therapy.

These evidence-based methods ensure that the work you do is supported by science and focused on addressing relationship distress effectively.

  • A Personalized Follow-Up Care Plan

The intensive doesn’t end once the session is over. Together, we’ll create a personalized, written plan for next steps. This may include scheduled individual or couples follow-up sessions and specific practices tailored for your daily life.

By integrating these tools into your routines, the insights and skills learned will have the opportunity to take root and flourish over time.

With compassionate guidance and personalized care, these sessions provide a powerful foundation for lasting change in your relationship.

What to Expect

Couples intensive sessions are designed to provide a focused and supportive environment for meaningful growth. These sessions create space for you and your partner to work collaboratively on strengthening your relationship.

Below, we outline what you can expect during this deeply nurturing and purposeful experience.

  • Two to Four Concrete Goals

At the outset, we’ll work with you to identify a small, focused set of objectives—perhaps reducing conflict escalation, rebuilding emotional connection, or strengthening the way you communicate day to day.

Keeping the goals specific ensures your energy goes exactly where it’s needed most.

  • Structured Breaks Along the Way

Emotional work is demanding, and pushing through exhaustion rarely serves anyone. That’s why intensives include planned breaks that allow you to rest, reset, and return to the work with a clear head.

These pauses protect your well-being while keeping the therapeutic momentum alive.

  • Careful Safety Screening and Monitoring

Your safety and comfort are central to everything we do. We screen and monitor throughout to make sure joint intensive work remains appropriate for both partners.

Couples intensives are not suitable for every situation—particularly when one partner feels fearful, when there is active coercion, or when there are immediate safety concerns.

In those cases, we’ll provide compassionate guidance toward the individual support, specialized services, or resources that will truly help. This honesty is part of our commitment to caring for you well.

  • A Clear Plan for What Comes Next

You’ll leave with more than new insights—you’ll leave with a written roadmap. That means scheduled follow-up sessions, agreements for handling conflict, and at-home practices to keep building on the progress you’ve made.

Reaching out for help during a hard season takes courage, and you don’t have to navigate it alone.

If you and your partner are ready to do focused, meaningful work on your relationship, a couples intensive at New Hope Counseling may be the supportive next step you’ve been looking for.

We’d be honored to walk alongside you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a couples intensive session?

Couples intensive sessions are extended, structured counseling appointments designed to address urgent or longstanding relationship challenges. They focus on accelerating progress through concentrated, goal-oriented work, unlike traditional weekly therapy sessions.

  • How do I know if I need an intensive versus weekly counseling?

If you’ve been in weekly counseling and feel like you’re circling the same issues without traction, or if you’re in a moment of acute crisis (recent betrayal, considering separation, a major rupture) and can’t wait weeks for progress, an intensive is often a better fit.

If you’re just starting to address relationship concerns, weekly counseling may be the more appropriate — and more affordable — starting point. We can talk through which makes sense for you on the consultation call.

  • Who are couples intensives suitable for?

They are ideal for couples experiencing repetitive conflict, significant life transitions, or difficulty accessing regular therapy due to busy schedules or geographical separation. However, they are not suitable for situations involving fear, active coercion, or immediate safety concerns.

  • How long is a couples intensive session?

The exact timing may vary depending on individual needs, but sessions typically include several hours of focused therapeutic work in one or more blocks to allow for meaningful progress.

  • What happens during the session?

Intensives combine teaching moments, structured discussions, emotion-regulation exercises, guided reflections, and evidence-based therapeutic techniques. The time is balanced with planned breaks to maintain emotional engagement without overwhelm.

  • What if something difficult comes up — an affair, a past trauma, a mental health crisis?

This is part of why the intensive format works well with an EMDR-trained clinician. If trauma or acute distress surfaces during our time together, I’m equipped to work with it directly rather than pausing the process to refer you elsewhere.

That said, if either partner is in active crisis (safety risk, untreated addiction, undisclosed abuse), we’ll talk through that on the consultation call first to make sure the intensive is appropriate and safe for both of you.

  • Do both partners need to want to be there?

Both partners need to be willing to show up and participate honestly — that doesn’t mean equally optimistic, just willing. If one partner is fundamentally unwilling to engage, an intensive isn’t likely to help, and we can talk about better next steps on the consultation call.

  • What are some common goals for a couples intensive?

Goals are personalized but might include improving communication, rebuilding trust, reducing conflict escalation, or enhancing emotional intimacy. Sessions are tailored to tackle the specific issues most important to each couple.

  • What methods are used during the sessions?

The approach is grounded in evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral couple therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and integrative behavioral couple therapy, ensuring practical and well-researched strategies.

  • Will we have a plan after the intensive is over?

Yes, you will leave with a personalized, written follow-up plan. This roadmap may include recommended practices, scheduled sessions, and agreements to help you maintain and build on the progress made during the intensive.

  • Are there breaks during the session?

Yes, structured breaks are included to allow for rest and reflection. These pauses ensure the work remains productive and that both partners stay emotionally and mentally engaged.

  • Can all couples benefit from this format?

While many couples benefit greatly from intensives, sessions may not be suitable for couples where one partner feels unsafe or when active coercion is present. These situations require specialized support, and guidance will be provided to direct individuals to appropriate resources.

  • How do we prepare for a couples intensive?

Before the session, a thorough pre-intensive assessment is conducted. This includes individual and joint discussions to understand relationship dynamics, set clear goals, and assess readiness for intensive work.

A 20-minute call, no cost and no obligation, to see if a marriage intensive is the right next step for you and your partner.

Committing to an intensive is a significant decision — financially and emotionally. Before you book, we want you to feel confident it’s the right fit.

During this call, we’ll talk through what’s happening in your relationship, what you’ve already tried, and whether an intensive format makes sense for where you are right now.

This is not a sales call. If an intensive isn’t the right fit — or if weekly counseling, a referral, or a different approach would serve you better — we’ll tell you honestly.

  • What We’ll Cover In this Call

    • A brief history of what’s brought you to this point
    • Whether one or both partners are ready to participate
    • Any safety concerns (active abuse, untreated addiction, or unprocessed individual trauma that may need to be addressed before an intensive is appropriate)
    • Logistics: available dates, session format, and investment details
  • What’s the cancellation and deposit policy?

A 50% deposit secures your dates. The remaining balance is due one week before the intensive begins.

Deposits are nonrefundable within 7 days of the scheduled start date, since that time is held exclusively for you. If you need to reschedule with more than 7 days’ notice, we’ll find a new date together.

  • Is this covered by insurance?

No — this intensive is private pay only. I can provide a superbill with the relevant diagnostic and procedure codes so you can submit for out-of network reimbursement if your plan offers couples/family therapy benefits, but reimbursement isn’t guaranteed and depends on your specific plan.

  • Where does the intensive take place?

At my office ( view location ) or virtual if applicable.
